Human Health Risk Assessments

The results of the two types of health risk assessments are summarized in the graphs above. As was previously discussed, the two risk assessments include a hypothetical 70-year lifetime exposure and an 8.5 year project duration. Currently, risks are calculated on a weekly basis using the results of air samples obtained by Alton Geoscience and analyzed by the City of Burbank's contract laboratory. These analytical results are used to predict the highest concentrations of chemicals near a residence or workplace. In the case of the hypothetical 70 year lifetime exposure, the air concentration is assumed to exist 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, for 70 years. Although it is clear that the air concentrations would not exist for a period of 70 years, this conservative assumption ensures that the risks will not be underestimated. What is important to note in the following graphs of risk, are the risks relative to the "acceptable" risk level. Risks which are below the "acceptable" risk are in compliance with the CUP.
