Traffic Bureau One of the many functions of the
Burbank Police Department Traffic Bureau is to reduce or eliminate traffic
collisions and to improve traffic flow throughout our City. This is so
important to our Department that we have included this in our Mission Statement. The Burbank Police Traffic Bureau has 12 Officers assigned to uniformed motorcycle patrol. There are also two motor Sergeants, two Detectives and one Motor Lieutenant assigned to this bureau. All of the seventeen officers assigned to the Traffic Bureau are motorcycle certified. A Parking Control Supervisor, seven Parking Control Officers and twenty-five School Crossing Guards are also assigned to the Traffic Bureau. The Burbank Police Department Traffic Bureau is responsible for pedestrian and vehicle traffic safety. This is accomplished by incorporating the three "E's" of traffic safety. The three "E's" are education, engineering and enforcement. The Traffic Bureau is responsible for traffic safety EDUCATION classes in most of the elementary, middle and high schools of the City of Burbank. These classes usually address topics such as driving under the influence, skateboards and bicycle regulations and violations, pedestrian safety and many other relevant topics. The Traffic Bureau assists the City of Burbank Traffic Engineer by identifying potential ENGINEERING problem areas throughout the City of Burbank. This would include, but not limited too, traffic flow problems, signage problems, parking problems, traffic signal phasing, traffic volume and speed problems. And lastly, the Traffic Bureau is responsible for traffic ENFORCEMENT. Random motor patrols, task force area saturation, and vehicular checkpoints accomplish enforcement.
Enforcement seems to be the most notorious of the above three solutions. However there is a direct correlation between strict traffic enforcement of traffic laws and the reduction of all levels of traffic collisions, including traffic related fatalities.
The Traffic Bureau is always looking for innovative ways of mitigating traffic problems. We believe that total traffic safety can only be accomplished when the entire community becomes involved.
