Citizen and Youth Academies

These academies give Burbank residents and youth an opportunity to see how police officers work as well as gain a better understanding of departmental operations.  These mini-police academies are designed to familiarize citizens and youth with the department’s community policing philosophy, internal policies, and the guiding principles of law and ethical conduct governing the delivery of police services within our community.  Graduates of the Citizens Academy are eligible to become Burbank Police Department volunteers and assist Police personnel in the station.   The Youth Academy also teaches young adults how to go about seeking a career in law enforcement or other public service.  The Youth Academy is available to young adults between the ages of 14 and 18.

Community Resource Officer

The Community Resource Officer acts as a liaison between the community and the Police Department.  This person is responsible for crime prevention programs such as Neighborhood Watch and Crimestoppers.  The Community Resource Officer also speaks to community groups and assists in community problem solving.

D.A.R.E. & SRO Programs

The success of the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program is based on the cooperative efforts between the Police Department, our local schools, and parental support.  DARE is taught to fifth grade students and is designed to help them make better choices.  These choices include avoiding drugs, gangs, and violence.  The program is taught in 14 separate lessons with each one focusing on a different aspect of behavior and human nature.

In addition to teaching DARE, School Resource Officers (SRO’s) are based at each of Burbank’s Middle Schools and public High Schools.  They are responsible for responding to problems that occur on or around school grounds.  The SRO’s also investigate crimes against children and assist Juvenile Detectives.

Outreach Center

The Outreach Center is a cooperative effort between the Burbank Unified School District, the City of Burbank, the Burbank Police Department, the Los Angeles County Probation Department, and the Department of Children and Family Services; and focuses on providing assistance to families and at-risk youth. A School Resource Officer is assigned to the Outreach Center to provide law enforcement experience and expertise.

Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of citizens in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime and the perception of crime in their communities.  Neighborhood Watch involves neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance.  Participants are taught techniques that reduce the risk of being victimized at home, in their vehicles, and in public places.  They are also taught the importance of recognizing suspicious activities and sounds, evaluating them, and properly reporting them to the Police Department.  Participants are taught how to make their homes more secure, to properly identify their property, and how to look out for their neighbors.  Neighborhood Watch provides an opportunity for a cohesive body of concerned, involved, neighbor-participants to address issues that concern their neighborhood and issues that concern the entire community.

Street Beat

"Street Beat" is a live, call-in television program, which airs every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. on BTV6, Burbank's government access channel on Charter Communications cable channel 6.  This show discusses a variety of police and community oriented topics.

BPD Volunteers

The Burbank Police Volunteer Program gives qualified individuals the opportunity to lend their time and skills to help the organization.  These volunteers must past a stringent background check and attend training classes to be accepted into the program.  Volunteers help with administrative and public service projects, and help promote positive police-citizen relations.

If you have any questions regarding our community programs, please contact the COPs Bureau at (818) 238-3230, Monday through Friday, during normal business hours.
