The Public Works Department plans, designs, builds, operates and maintains the City's public works systems in a financially and environmentally responsible manner while responding to the community's changing needs.  The Department is responsible for engineering, maintenance, and operational services for street, alley, sidewalk, storm drain, and sanitary sewer improvements located within 227 miles of the City's public rights-of-way. The Department also provides refuse collection services; maintenance and repair of general City public buildings; vehicular and landscape equipment management; and operation of the Burbank Landfill, the Burbank Water Reclamation Plant, and the Burbank Recycle Center.

There are seven major divisions in the Public Works Department: Administration; Capital Projects;  Engineering Design and Construction; Traffic; Fleet and Building Maintenance; Street and Sanitation; and Water Reclamation and Sewer.  Both Water Reclamation and Sewer and Refuse Collection and Disposal are enterprise funds that are funded exclusively by user fees.
