Statement by City of
Burbank January 19, 2001 We
have received a letter this afternoon from the Airport Authority notifying
the City that the Authority has withdrawn its applications to build a new
terminal on the former Lockheed B-6 site.
The Authority’s decision is apparently based only upon the
City’s need to comply with state law and prepare a subsequent
Environmental Impact Report (EIR). The
state law requirements are clear and City staff was proceeding to review
the Authority’s applications as quickly as possible while complying with
those requirements. This additional analysis would update 10-year-old data on
such matters as air quality, traffic and noise.
Staff estimated that this update could take less than six months
with the Airport’s cooperation. We had been hopeful that the application process
would provide a vehicle for the City and the Authority finally to reach
agreement on an acceptable terminal project that would meet everyone’s
needs. We remain committed to
reaching an agreement for a new terminal on the B-6 Property and, despite
today’s letter, we hope that the Authority will conclude that it is in
everyone’s best interest to resume a dialogue with the City. With
regard to the Authority’s four remaining applications for buying
property in the Runway Safety Area and moving parking lots A and B, the
City staff will continue to process these applications in accordance with
State law and established local procedures. # # # |
